  • Bending Deflectometers For ISO 178, JIS K 7171, And ASTM D790 Compliant Testing

    Shimadzu Corp.

After tensile testing, flexural tests are the most common strength tests for plastics and other resins. The main standards for plastic flexural (bend) tests are ISO 178, JIS K 7171, and ASTM D790, which require very accurate test systems. These standards include flexural strain measurements using a deflectometer, ranging from micro-strain measurements in the elastic region, the reversible elongation at the beginning of tests, to larger strain measurements in the plastic region. Shimadzu's deflectometers integrate easily into AG-X plus series, AGS-X series, and EZ-X test frames and Trapezium X testing software. Since these deflectometers push up against the specimen from below, the specimen color is not a limiting factor, as can be for laser type non-contact deflectometers. Furthermore, these deflectometers can partially absorb the shock during specimen failure, preventing specimen fragments from scattering.

  • Mechanical Testing Services

    National Technical Systems

The physical and mechanical testing of a product comprises a critical part of the product and development process. Applied physical force such as vibration, shock stresses, and strain can reveal the inelastic behavior of the material. Mechanical testing allows the product developers to understand the product better, identify vulnerabilities, and establish stronger quality control. Mechanical testing employs a variety of strength tests that can determine the suitability of a material or component for the intended application. It measures characteristics such as elasticity, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, facture toughness, impact resistance, stress fracture, and the fatigue limit.

  • Break Strength Testing

    National Technical Systems

To determine the failure point or break strength, you will need to define what a break is (break detector). Generally, there are two common types of breaks: the sharp break is referred to the measurement when load or force drops by 5% from its peak load measurement. A percentage break is another form of break and is generally determined by the sample material and its relationship to load degradation from a peak load measurement. A plastic material will likely have a load drop of 5%, but not represent a break. In this case, a percentage break would need to be applied. In a tensile test, the breaking load is the break strength.

  • Pendulum Testers

    Instron

Instron pendulums are designed to meet the growing demand for accurate and repeatable impact testing on a wide range of materials. Used to determine the mechanical and physical properties of metals, polymers, composites, and finished products for both research and development (R&D) and quality control (QC), the pendulum family is capable of performing Charpy, Izod, and Tensile tests according to international standards. As uninstrumented systems, they provide the absorbed energy value. By fully instrumenting the pendulum, a more complete study of how the material reacts to impact can be gathered. This information is useful when evaluating the type of failure and the dynamic response of the material.

  • Extensometers for Indirect Tensile Testing of Asphalt

Model 3911 - Jinan Testing Equipment IE Corporation

For indirect tensile testing, such as for resilient modulus, these extensometers measure the lateral deformation of specimens. They are self-supporting on the sample and clip on in seconds. The traditional way this deformation has been measured was prone to errors caused by slight rocking of the sample as it is loaded. The self-supporting design of the Model 3911 eliminates this problem. This unit will handle the dynamic pulse requirements of resilient modulus testing. The speed of mounting makes test set-up much faster than with the older method. The pivot mounting used ensures that the specimen contact pads meet the often uneven asphalt surface as well as possible. The measuring range options available allow a wide range of testing, yet can easily measure the sometimes very small displacements required. The Model 3911 extensometers are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed for strain gaged transducers. Most often they are connected to a test machine controller. The signal conditioning electronics for the extensometer is typically included with the test machine controller or may often be added. In this case the extensometer is shipped with the proper connector and wiring to plug directly into the electronics. For systems lacking the required electronics, Epsilon can provide a variety of solutions, allowing the extensometer output to be connected to data acquisition boards, chart recorders or other equipment.
